Biodiversity underpins everything around us, from healthy ecosystems to resilient communities. When it is protected, nature and people thrive together.
It’s always encouraging to see the commitment of local authorities and biodiversity teams working to safeguard Ireland’s natural heritage through long-term, action-focused plans.
For Meath County Council, I contributed to the Meath Biodiversity Action Plan 2025–2030 by creating the visual design and a suite of creative wildlife illustrations. I was approached by Meath County Council’s biodiversity officer, who asked me to develop illustrations in a similar style to the cover artwork I created for Wild Wonders, an anthology of short nature stories for children; symbolic, narrative-led, and closely connected to nature. Ben provided guidance on the key elements and their overall arrangement, and I developed the final illustrations and design.
I was delighted to be involved in this project and to support work that will guide biodiversity protection and restoration across County Meath over the coming years.
Have a look at the video below showing my work-in-progress on the Plan, and at some photos of the final product.
Each of the large illustrations I created for the action plan has been also used on postcards given away at the action plan's launch. Below are some of them:
1. 'Bending the biodiversity curve, helping wildlife to flourish.' I was suggested to create an illustration implementing the biodiversity curve, and I came up with a concept to use a soft and flexible willow branch being lifted by a hand – to suggest that we're able to reverse the biodiversity loss Ireland has been experiencing for many years now. The curve is divided into three parts; the past on the left, the present in the middle, and the hopeful future on the right. I made sure I listed the animals on the left according to their timeline, so nothing is random there; maybe apart from what's happening in the air ;)

2. 'Reconnecting people with nature'

3. 'Meath County Council leading by example, being proactive in planning, protecting and providing space for nature'
